Podcast: the end of Augusto Aras’ management at PGR – Folha – 09/26/2023 – Podcasts

Augusto Aras’ penultimate day at the head of the Attorney General’s Office was marked by a speech from him praising his own administration — which “maintained the democratic balance in the country”, according to him — and praise from colleagues and Minister Dias Toffoli, of the Supreme Court. Federal Court. For the magistrate, “maybe we wouldn’t have democracy” without Aras’ silence.
The statements contrast with the criticism directed at the attorney general throughout his term, which was seen as an omission in relation to suspicions about Jair Bolsonaro (PL) — especially linked to the pandemic, the environmental area and attacks on democracy. The former president appointed Aras to the post in 2019 and reappointed him two years later.
This stance of the PGR towards the Bolsonaro administration contributed to Lula (PT) indicating that he does not intend to reappoint Aras. The favorites are deputy attorney general Antonio Carlos Bigonha, who has the support of a wing of the PT, and electoral attorney general Paulo Gonet Branco, sponsored by STF ministers Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre de Moraes.
None of them are on the triple list of the National Association of Public Prosecutors, a mechanism that Lula used for appointments to the PGR in his previous terms.
This Tuesday’s Café da Manhã (26) discusses Augusto Aras’ marks in the PGR, debates the model for choosing the attorney general and analyzes what profile the head of the Federal Public Ministry should have now. The podcast interviews political scientist Fábio Kerche, a professor at UniRio who has studied the topic for over 30 years. He is the author of the book “Virtude e Limites — Autonomia e Attribuções do Ministério Público no Brasil”.
