Podcast: the change in command of the Army – Folha – 01/25/2023 – Podcasts

In the midst of a crisis of confidence between the government and the Armed Forces, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) dismissed the commander of the Army, General Júlio Cesar de Arruda, who did not complete a month in office.
In his place, General Tomás Miguel Miné Ribeiro Paiva, who occupied the post of military commander of the Southeast, was chosen. Days earlier, Paiva had made a scathing speech in defense of democracy, asking for respect for the election results and defending the apolitical and non-partisan position of the Army.
According to the president’s assistants, Arruda had been avoiding taking measures in response to Lula’s suspicions that agents of the Armed Forces had facilitated the action of the coup leaders on January 8. The sudden change in command of the Army would have the potential to intensify tensions, but the Lula government considered that the general’s departure was important for the president to reinforce his authority.
At Breakfast this Wednesday (25th), the reporter from Sheet Cézar Feitoza tells how Tomás Paiva was raised to the highest post in the Army, discusses whether he is the democrat he signaled in his speech and analyzes the weight of the change in command.
