Podcast: cases of misogyny due to maternity at CNPq – 01/15/2024 – Podcasts

The debate about gender inequality in academia has resurfaced with a series of cases of researchers who had issues related to motherhood as justification for negative evaluations of their scientific production. Last week, the Sheet told another story like this, from the professor at USP in São Carlos Cibele Russo.
A statistics researcher, she was denied a productivity grant by the CNPq in December. The opinion cited that maternity leaves would explain the “small number of students [de mestrado e doutorado] formed” by it in the period evaluated.
The difficulty for women in academia is confirmed by a survey by the Parent in Science movement, which showed that they make up only 35% of productivity scholarship holders at CNPq — the level has been maintained for two decades. The repercussion of recent cases led the body to make it mandatory to extend the evaluation period for projects by researchers who are mothers.
This Monday’s Café da Manhã (15) tells the story of Cibele Russo and listens to journalist Victoria Damasceno, editor of the Todas initiative, to discuss gender inequality in academia, science and the job market.
The audio program is published on Spotify, a streaming service partner of Sheet in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the app, simply register for free.
