Plans have a 20% increase in hospitalizations for rare diseases – 02/28/2024 – Mônica Bergamo

Health plans in Brazil recorded, between 2021 and 2022, a 20.4% increase in the number of hospitalizations of beneficiaries with rare diseases. The number of visits to these patients increased from 156.5 thousand to 188.4 thousand in the period analyzed.

This is what the study “Rare Diseases: Panorama of Spending on Hospitalizations in Health Plans in Brazil” shows, from the Institute of Supplementary Health Studies (IESS), carried out using data from the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS). The material will be released this Thursday (29), on the occasion of World Rare Disease Day.

The survey mapped hospitalizations based on a set of 50 types of rare diseases with specific treatments. The list includes conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Guillain-Barré syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus.

The increase, according to the study, may be related to the postponement of treatment for less serious illnesses during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The highest concentration of hospitalizations for rare diseases was recorded by medical and hospital plans in the Southeast: it jumped from 99.5 thousand, in 2021, to 122.2 thousand in the following year, equivalent to an increase of 22.8%.

Next comes the South region, where the number of hospitalized patients went from 28.5 thousand to 31.9 thousand, in the period analyzed, registering a growth of 12%.

The two regions offer a greater range of treatments and greater diagnostic capacity compared to the rest of the country, according to the IESS.

The increase in the number of hospitalizations for rare diseases caused healthcare providers to experience a 26% increase in expenses for this type of procedure. In 2021, R$347.1 million were allocated and, in the following year, R$437.2 million.

Large plans recorded the highest expenses. The value went from R$276.2 million to R$353.9 million in the same period.
