PL meets to reinforce opposition to Lula, but admits to respecting betrayals – 02/21/2023 – Panel

The PL, from former President Jair Bolsonaro, will hold a meeting next Wednesday (1st) with the federal bench to discuss how to strengthen the opposition to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The party, however, already admits the possibility of respecting, “within some limits”, parliamentarians who eventually vote with the government on some projects.

It will be the first time that the 99 deputies will meet to discuss how the relationship with the government will be.

The PL has been trying to position itself as a right-wing party, with an eye on the spoils of Bolsonarism, but the summit has been pressured by parliamentarians who, due to local arrangements, depend on the relationship with the federal government. According to leaders of the party, the challenge is to reach a common denominator.

“We have a very large and very diverse caucus, but it does not have independent action. What will happen is respect for parliamentary action, but within certain limits”, stressed the leader of the party in the Chamber, Altineu Côrtes (RJ).

In some agendas, he added, the party will not give up closing the issue and voting together. Côrtes also ruled out any participation of the PL in the Lula government. “Under no circumstances are we going to admit office appointments,” he said.

The meeting, scheduled by the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, and by Côrtes, was initially supposed to take place on the 15th, but was postponed due to the proximity to Carnival. Some state directorates should also be discussed at the meeting.
