Lula prioritizes the middle class, under the ghost of the 2013 demonstrations – 02/21/2023 – Panel

Haunted by the ghost of the 2013 demonstrations, the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) intends to prioritize the middle class and avoid the demands that PT members suffered in the past.

“We know that we lost part of the segment and we want to focus on getting closer and conquering it, yes”, says the Minister of Social Development, Wellington Dias.

Among the policies aimed at the group are the income tax exemption ranges, a specific Minha Casa, Minha Vida line, a program for debtors and the reinforcement of Pronampe (National Support Program for Micro and Small Companies).

Last Thursday (16), Lula himself set the tone for how the segment should be treated.

“We need to serve the middle class, because deep down, deep down, it is the middle class that is not contemplated in almost any of the State’s public policies. 10,000 reais, that is, there is no affordable housing for them, they don’t want to live in a 40 square meter house”, he declared during the announcement of readjustment for research grants.

“We don’t build a bigger house, so they can’t buy it either, so he is orphaned of father, mother and government. So we need to think that, in addition to taking care of the poorest people, we have to take care of people from middle class, because they are the ones who support the economy of this country.”

The concern is not for nothing. Among PT leaders, especially those who participated in the government of former President Dilma Rousseff, there is an assessment that by focusing on the poorer classes, the party ended up losing dialogue with a significant part of the population. Many see the 2013 demonstrations, when one of the main complaints was the improvement of public services for the C class, the seed of what culminated in the impeachment in 2016.

There is still an economic bias in attention. “A larger middle class is more security for the economy itself, as we also create high consumption power and become less dependent on international crises”, assesses Dias.

The minister points out that in PT governments, with the rise of the poorest, the C class came to represent 54% of the population. Today, after a period of global pandemic, it represents only 43%, according to him.
