Rescue teams in São Sebastião (SP) found three children alive this Tuesday afternoon (21) who were buried in one of the city’s hills, informed Mayor Felipe Augusto (PSDB).
When he spoke with the Panel, the information had just arrived and he still did not know the ages or the exact location of the rescue. “But this episode gives us strength to carry on with our work. Where there is life, there is hope,” he said.
The teams are working 24 hours a day since the region was hit by a record volume of rain, reports the mayor.
There are about 600 men working, taking turns in shifts and all of them with little sleep. “It’s a coordinated operation in the three spheres of power, Union, state and municipality, with responsibility and agility, and a lot of desire to make it work. There’s nobody leaning on.”
The rains have cooled down, but Felipe Augusto attests that the situation is still critical. 200mm of rain is expected over the next three days. Although it is less than the 600 mm that fell in less than 24 hours last weekend, it is still a lot, considering the landslides and the impact that the first storm has already caused.
Precisely because of the delicacy of the situation, search operations do not have a deadline to end. The group will remain mobilized as long as there is a need.
In addition to the search for victims, there are also teams mobilized from private companies working on the recovery of structures and telephone signal, for example. Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) monitors the situation on site.
The City Hall of São Sebastião, on the north coast of São Paulo, released, this Tuesday (21), the names of 12 victims of the storm that affected the municipality between Saturday (18) and Sunday (19).
So far, the Civil Defense has recorded the deaths of 44 people, 43 in São Sebastião and one in Ubatuba. The total was updated on Tuesday morning.
