PL discusses putting pressure on Kassio Nunes – 06/20/2023 – Panel

In a meeting this Tuesday (20), members of the PL talked about the expectation that the minister of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) Kassio Nunes Marques, appointed by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), will make some gesture in the direction of the former -agent in the judgment that may culminate in your ineligibility.

They expect the magistrate to ask for a review, contributing to the strategy of postponing the outcome in search of a less unfavorable context, or even voting against ineligibility.

In addition to Bolsonaro, the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, and General Braga Netto, who ran as vice president on the presidential ticket, took part in the meeting. The leader of the party in the Chamber, Altineu Cortes, (RJ) was part of the meeting. According to reports, at this time, the former president only listened.

There is a fear that the result will be unanimous, isolating Bolsonaro politically and strengthening the president of the TSE, Alexandre de Moraes. Meeting participants talked about the need to mobilize social networks in order to prevent the defeat from being overwhelming.

In evaluating those present, Kassio Nunes will need to make a calculation about which side to displease. If his option is to vote according to the majority of the TSE, he may be under the sights of Bolsonarist militancy, seen as aggressive. Participants in the conversation commented on the constraints that other ministers have already experienced by Bolsonaro supporters.

This Monday’s judgment (22) assesses whether the former representative committed abuse of political power by organizing a meeting at the Alvorada Palace with foreign ambassadors to launch attacks against the Brazilian electoral system.

Legally, the strategy will be to reinforce what they call the disproportion between the offense committed and the penalty. Bolsonaro was already fined BRL 20,000 in September 2022 for advertising in advance, when broadcasting the meeting on TV Brasil. As it is the same fact of origin, they will argue that something whose fine was so low cannot later be punished with ineligibility.

In addition, they will try to buy time as much as possible, hoping that there will be a more favorable political moment. The TSE, however, made changes to its bylaws and, now, the application for review has a deadline to be returned, which in practice reduces the chances of success of the strategy.
