The TJDFT (Court of Justice for the Federal District and Territories) annulled the conviction for moral damages against former driver Nelson Piquet for speaking about Lewis Hamilton. In March, the court had determined that the Brazilian should pay a fine of R$5 million for phrases considered racist regarding the Briton, seven-time F1 champion.

In an interview given in 2021, Piquet commented on the 2016 World Cup, in which Hamilton was surpassed by the German Nico Rosberg: “The black guy must have been giving more c… at that time, it was a bit bad.” The word “nigga” was used more than once.

The entities Educafro, the Santo Dias Center for Human Rights of the Archdiocese of São Paulo and the National LGBTI Alliance then took action and initially obtained the conviction, which has now been overturned. According to the case’s rapporteur, Aiston Henrique de Sousa, the Brazilian “made a mockery”, but “there is no demonstration of hate speech”.

Educafro’s lawyer, Marlon Reis, warned that he will appeal. The case will be taken to the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
