PGE wants Bolsonarist to be investigated for transphobia – 07/20/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Electoral Attorney General’s Office (PGE) sent a representation to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in which it requests that federal deputy Abilio Brunini (PL-MT) be investigated for the alleged commission of crimes of transphobia and gender political violence against deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP).

The agency’s demonstration comes after Brunini was accused by parliamentarians of directing a homotransphobic insinuation at Hilton. The episode took place last week, during the January 8 session of the CPI.

The PL deputy had already been scolded by the chairman of the commission, Arthur Maia (União-BA), for filming and making fun of those present, who were interrogating Army lieutenant colonel Mauro Cid.

In response to his colleague’s behavior, Hilton stated that Brunini needed to “treat his need in another space”, since Congress would be a serious place. The deputy continued with her speech, but was interrupted by a complaint from Senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE).

According to the PT, the PL deputy would have said that Hilton would be “offering services” by suggesting that he address his need. The version was confirmed by other parliamentarians.

“The facts depend on verification, including through analysis of the audiovisual system of the place where the debates were established, of the filming cameras, testimonies of witnesses, among other appropriate steps”, says, to the PGR, the regional attorney of the republic Raquel Branquinho.

“The analysis of the parliamentarian’s speech may configure, in addition to the embarrassment, humiliation and persecution against a parliamentarian in the exercise of her function, an attack on this specific group of women, with the purpose of preventing or hindering the exercise of the elective mandate of elected trans women, notably those elected to the Chamber of Deputies”, it also says.

In the letter to the PGR, obtained by the column, Branquinho points out that the Electoral Code provides for a fine and sentence of imprisonment from one to four years for those who practice gender-based political violence — that is, harass, embarrass, humiliate, persecute or threaten candidates or parliamentarians by their gender, color, race or ethnicity.

As Abilio Brunini has a privileged jurisdiction, it will be up to the Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, to decide whether to comply with the PGE’s request and open a criminal case against the parliamentarian.

After the CPI session on January 8, the PSOL bench in the Chamber filed a request for the impeachment of the Bolsonarist deputy. The party asks that the President of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), forward the case to the Council of Ethics and Parliamentary Decorum so that measures are adopted against the alleged breach of decorum.

The deputy himself denies the allegations. “I do not admit homophobia. I ask for respect from everyone, I ask for respect from myself too. I cannot let this narrative be enshrined or a narrative built. I have no interest in treating anyone here for gender reasons, just as I have not done so far”, he said, in a statement.
