São Paulo won one of the three remaining places in the quarter-finals of the Campeonato Paulista after beating Ituano 3-2, in a game with a dramatic ending this Sunday (10), in Itu.

The results of the 12th round of the competition confirmed the four matches of the quarter-final stage of the state — São Paulo and Novorizontino and Palmeiras and Ponte Preta were the last defined knockout games. The duel between Santos and Portuguesa and the clash between Bragantino and Inter de Limeira were already guaranteed in advance.

Ituano and Santo André had the worst campaigns in the state, with six and eight points, respectively, and were relegated to the second division.

In group D, São Paulo, Novorizontino and São Bernardo entered the last round fighting for the two places in the quarterfinals.

In the game in Itu, the Morumbi club was winning the match until the 43rd minute of the second half, when they were tied.

The result, combined with the victories of Novorizontino and São Bernardo against Portuguesa and Mirassol, respectively, eliminated São Paulo.

But, 50 minutes into the second half, the referee went to the VAR to confirm a penalty for the tricolor, converted by Lucas Moura, sealing the classification.

“It’s a feeling of relief. Despite the difficulties, the slightly heavy pitch, we can’t suffer like we did”, said Luciano in an interview after the end of the game. He scored the team’s second goal of the match and became the club’s third highest scorer of the century.

In group B, Ponte Preta also guaranteed their place in the quarter-finals this Sunday, even though they were defeated 1-0 by Santo André, but benefited from the 0-0 draw between Água Santa and Corinthians. Ponte Preta and Água Santa were fighting for second group vacancy.

The Campinas team will face Palmeiras, who were already classified after beating Botafogo-SP on Saturday (9) by 1-0. Current champions, Alviverde have the best campaign in the championship so far, with 28 points.

Santos and Portuguesa was one of the clashes already known before the last round. The Baixada team finished the group stage as leader of group A, with 25 points, and qualified for the knockout stages again after three years. On Saturday, they beat Inter de Limeira, 3-2, in Vila Belmiro.

Portuguesa scored just 10 points and managed to qualify despite losing 2-0 to Novorizontino in the last round of the group stage.

The interior clash between Red Bull Bragantino and Inter de Limeira had also already been defined. The two teams ended the group stage with 21 and 17 points, respectively, leaving Corinthians in third and out of the quarter-final stage, who had 14.

The quarter-finals, which take place in a single game, are scheduled for next weekend, according to the table that will still be released by the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF). The leaders of each group guarantee the advantage of field command.
