Parties want center federation preview in election – 06/28/2023 – Panel

In a meeting held this Tuesday (27), leaders of PSDB, Citizenship, MDB and Podemos agreed to seek unified candidacies for city halls in the state of São Paulo next year.

The idea would be to use this effort as a kind of preview of a future federation uniting the four legends.

“We are going to start a work of trying to reconcile our objectives for the 2024 election, building support wherever possible. It would be a pilot for a future agreement”, says the mayor of Santo André, Paulo Serra, who is also president of the PSDB-Cidadania federation in the state of Sao Paulo.

PSDB and Citizenship already formally constitute a federation. In recent months, efforts have been made to get Podemos and the MDB to join this union, but there have been political and legal difficulties.

According to Serra, if it is not possible to unite the four centrists officially, that union should at least be political for the time being.

The president of the MDB, Baleia Rossi, the national and state presidents of Podemos, Renata Abreu and Rodrigo Gambale, respectively, the leader of Citizenship in the Chamber of Deputies, Alex Manente, as well as Serra, who is close to the toucan president, Eduardo, participated in the conversation. According to the mayor of Santo André, the work of mapping the cities in the state will start to be done now, but there is already a preliminary assessment that in 80% of the municipalities an agreement is possible. “This gives the candidates great security that, if they win the election, they already have a guaranteed base of support,” he said.

For Serra, the four parties need to be together in a political scenario of polarization between lulistas and bolsonaristas. “What we’re looking for is a center front,” he said.
