Paralympic weightlifting athlete from Amazon secures silver at world championships and seeks Paralympic spot

Maria de Fátima is currently fifth in the world rankings

The weightlifting para-athlete, Maria de Fátima, continues in search of a place in the Paris 2024 Paralympics. This Saturday (2), the Amazonian woman secured silver in the 13th Fazza Dubai Parapowerlifting Wolrd Cup, the world championship of the sport and, with this result, adds important points in search of the Olympic index.

Representing the Brazilian weightlifting team and with support from the Government of Amazonas through the Bolsa Sport Estadual and Projeto Amazonas at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Maria competed in the up to 67kg category, Maria lifting 121kg to secure second place, behind China’s Yujao Tan , who lifted 130kg, completed the podium Ya-hsuan Lin, from Taipei, with a mark of 82kg. In the same competition, in 2022, Maria won the medal in the team competition.

“The feeling is that I’m on the right path. I thank God for another achievement achieved, the Government of Amazonas and also my dear city Tefé. The dream of a Paralympic spot remains firm and closer than ever”, said Maria de Fátima.

The next competition will be the World Cup stage, in Tblisi, Georgia, between June 20th and 26th, being the last before the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The competition will be worth points for the A index, defined by the Paralympic Committee Brazilian Championship (CPB), for athletes who will represent Brazil in the Paralympics.

“Maria de Fátima’s journey towards the Paris 2024 Paralympics is a reflection of the potential that we seek to encourage and develop”, said the Secretary of State for Sports and Leisure (Sedel), Jorge Oliveira.
