The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) has been in Macapá since Friday (8), when they carried out the classification of more than 20 athletes from the “Paradesportive Games of the Municipality of Macapá” project and will take place this Saturday (9) and Sunday ( 10), the Paralympic Athletics Championship. The competition brings together around 60 para-athletes, who seek to surpass their indexes, thus achieving classification to compete nationally.

On Saturday (9), the competition took place on the athletics track of the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap), South Zone of the capital, in the morning and afternoon. The modalities include shot put, discus and javelin throw, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 5000m running and long jump.

For the project coordinator, Luziwania Oliveira, the arrival of the CPB team to Macapá is of great relevance as it provides the opportunity for more athletes with some disability to pass through the classification. “The team carrying out the classification here prevents the para-athlete from having to travel to another state to identify their functional class, not to mention that parents can watch their children compete, which is not always possible when competitions take place in other regions” , said the coordinator.

Housewife Ana Célia Miranda, 37 years old, mother of para-athlete Luiz Felipe, confirmed the coordinator’s statement. She was very emotional, recording her son’s participation on her cell phone. “It’s the first time I see my boy participating in a championship. We don’t have the means to travel with him, but I’m always cheering him on. Today, I can’t even explain the joy I’m feeling because he managed to beat all his previous records”, said his mother.

Luiz Felipe was just happy for achieving the records. “I’m very happy and excited,” said the para-athlete who participated in the shot put, discus and javelin throw.

The Championship aims, among other things, to check the para-athletes’ indexes so that they can participate at national level.

Raphael Couto, physiotherapist and CPB classifier, spoke about the Functional Classification and why it is necessary. “We follow the rules of the International Paralympic Committee, which brings this manual classification and distributes it into classes. For example, in athletics, a leg amputee does not compete with an arm amputee, they are different classes. This is necessary to make competitions fairer”, explained Couto.

The president of the Amapá Athletics Federation (FAAp), Dilson Belfort, spoke about the importance of the competition. “Here we have a competition approved by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, hence the importance of holding these events in order to validate the ratings of our para-athletes at a national level”, highlighted the president.

The competition takes place in the morning and afternoon, bringing together around 60 para-athletes from the “Paradesportive Games of the Municipality of Macapá” project. The championship continues on Sunday (10), at the Zerão stadium, in the morning and afternoon.

The objective of the classification is to guarantee equal conditions in the dispute and is carried out in 3 phases:

1) Physical examinations,

2) Functional assessment, with tests of muscle strength, range of joint movement, measurement of limbs and coordination

3) Technical exam, which consists of demonstrating the test itself, with the athlete using the necessary adaptations. The evaluators analyze the performance of the movement, the technique used, as well as the prostheses and orthoses.

The Amapaense Athletics Federation (FAAp) is the organizer of the event, in partnership with Macapá City Hall and the Paralympic Reference Center (Amapá hub), with the participation of the municipal departments of Education (Semed) and Health (Semsa), Confederation Brazilian Athletics Association (CBAT) and support from the University of Amapá (Unifap) and the Macapaense Institute for Better Higher Education (IMMES).
