Flamengo beat the already relegated América-MG 3-0 this Sunday (26) in Uberlândia, in a match in the 35th round of the Brazilian Championship, but the result was not enough to take the club to the lead in the national tournament.

This is because Palmeiras, favorite for the title, drew 2-2 with Fortaleza at Castelão and remained in first place in the table.

América-MG posed risks to Flamengo, but the Rio club managed to prevail with goals from Everton, in the first half, and from Pedro and Everton Ribeiro in the second half.

In Fortaleza, the home team dominated the beginning of the game and opened the scoring with Thiago Galhardo. Palmeiras’ reaction came with a goal from Raphael Veiga in the 20th minute of the second half. Calebe scored next, putting Fortaleza ahead, and Palmeiras equalized again with a goal from Zé Rafael.

Botafogo, who were fighting to regain the lead in the tournament, drew 1-1 with Santos at the Nilton Santos stadium. The club now has eight games without a win — four defeats and four draws.

The Rio team opened the scoring 10 minutes into the first half with a header from Danilo Barbosa. The victory seemed assured until Messias scored in the final minutes of the second half. If they won, Botafogo had a chance of returning to first place in the Brazilian Championship, depending on the result of the match between Palmeiras and Fortaleza.

Before the start of the game, members of the clubs’ organized supporters clashed on the Presidente Dutra highway, near Belford Roxo, in Baixada Fluminense.

According to the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, the confrontation began when Botafogo fans attacked a vehicle accompanying the Santos bus and demanded intervention from the security forces.

At Arena MRV, Atlético-MG prevailed over Grêmio, with a score of 3-0, with goals from Guilherme Arana, Matías Zaracho and Hulk. The club reached 60 points and got closer to the first placed.

With this Sunday’s results, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Botafogo and Atlético-MG occupy the top four positions in the tournament, followed by Grêmio and Bragantino. With three rounds to go before the conclusion of the championship, just three points separate first place, with 63 points, from fourth place.

In the next round, Flamengo will face Atlético-MG at Maracanã, Palmeiras will host América-MG at Allianz Parque and Botafogo will go to Couto Pereira in a dispute against Coritiba, confirmed in Series B. The matches will take place next Wednesday (29) — Flamengo x Atlético-MG at 7:30 pm and the rest at 9:30 pm.

Coritiba’s relegation was sealed on Saturday (25), when the team lost 2-1 to Fluminense at Maracanã. The confirmation of the drop to Series B led to the publication of an open letter to the fans in which the club’s management promises a complete reformulation of the team.
