Ordem Princesa Isabel honored Bolsonarists – 09/04/2023 – Panel

Created at the end of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government and recently revoked by the current Ministry of Human Rights, the Princess Isabel Order of Merit honored the vast majority of politicians, religious and activists ideologically linked to the previous administration.

In the list of 120 people awarded the honor are former ministers such as Marcelo Queiroga (Health), Anderson Torres (Justice) and Damares Alves (Human Rights) and Bolsonarist federal deputies such as Bia Kicis (PL-DF), Osmar Terra (MDB- RS) and Soraya Santos (PL-RJ).

The relationship also has several people and entities that declare themselves “pro-life”, that is, against abortion, in addition to defenders of traditional forms of marriage and against debates on gender identity.

Among them are the evangelical churches Assembly of God, Gospel Foursquare and Sara Nossa Terra, the Catholic bishop Dom José Luis Hermoso, from Breves (PA) and the National Network in Defense of Life and Family.

There are also businessmen close to Bolsonarism, such as Elie Horn, from Cyrela, as well as civil police officers and former Federal Highway Police inspector Wendel Benevides, recently removed from office on suspicion of partiality in the conduct of processes involving the institution’s performance in the second election round.

Venezuelan diplomat Maria Teresa Belandria, who was recognized by Bolsonaro as ambassador to Brazil of self-proclaimed president Juan Guaidó, also received the commendation, as well as Dom Gabriel de Orleans e Bragança, representing the imperial family.

Bolsonaro himself and the former first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, were awarded the prize.

In the minority of recipients who have no connection with Bolsonarism are the CNI (National Confederation of Industry) and former model Luiza Brunet.

Most of the honorees received the Order at a ceremony on December 19 – only 26 were not present or sent representatives.

The Princess Isabel Order of Merit was created in December last year by the Bolsonaro government. Its revocation by the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will give way to an award honoring the black abolitionist leader Luiz Gama (1830-82).
