Opposition will face early identity crisis in 2023 – 07/12/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

When he was still living his electoral rehabilitation in the US, Jair Bolsonaro didn’t just dream of leading the right. He intended to be the operator of an opposition to Lula. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the former president warned that he would work to approve a liberal agenda in the economy in Congress and bar a leftist agenda in customs.

The articulation against tax reform was Bolsonaro’s inaugural fiasco. In addition to exposing a fracture in the opposition, the captain’s defeat accelerated the formation of a cordon sanitaire in the right-wing parties.

In recent days, heads of the three captions of the former Bolsonarist core sent the same message. Marcos Pereira (Republicans) said that Bolsonaro only represents the “extreme right”. Ciro Nogueira (PP) wrote that the opposition has “no license to be irresponsible” and announced that his party will vote in favor of some of Lula’s proposals.

Even Valdemar Costa Neto (PL) released his party to support government projects in exchange for amendments. The message was a safe-conduct for deputies who voted in favor of the reform and became the target of a digital lynching of Bolsonaristas.

The opposition goes through an early identity crisis. The parties that embraced the right gained strength with the former president and benefited from his outcry. Now, the group reduces Bolsonaro’s space, remakes plans for the next electoral cycle and lodges itself in Lula’s machine.

In the first half of the year, Bolsonaro was not the one who showed strength in leading the opposition. Arthur Lira and allies were the only ones capable of bothering Lula and threatening the president’s plans in Congress. The possible entry of the centrão into the government anesthetizes this threat.

The plan of these parties is to execute what they call a “responsible opposition” to limit Bolsonaro to the role of electoral supporter. These politicians recognize that any right-wing candidate will be dependent on the former president’s support, but they intend to control the damage that his style can cause.
