The approval of Flávio Dino for the position of minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) received several criticisms from parliamentarians and opposition politicians. Dino managed to be approved in the Senate plenary, this Wednesday (13), with the support of 47 senators. But the opposition obtained 31 votes against the nomination of the current Minister of Justice to the Supreme Court.

Some opposition senators spoke out against the decision taken by the CCJ and the plenary. Senator and former minister Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) highlighted the number of rejections of Dino’s name and said that the message that remains is for the 2026 elections. She highlighted that there is a need for more conservative names, in opposition to the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), are elected in the next general election.

Like Damares, senator Marcos Rogério (PL-RO) also highlighted that he voted against Dino’s choice. “In the same way as in the CCJ, I reaffirm my vote against the nomination of Flávio Dino to the STF. I am among the 31 senators who voted against,” he said.

Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) said that “democracy is agonizing” with the Minister of Justice’s departure to the STF. He lamented the lack of votes against the nomination. “I voted #DinoNao. Unfortunately, the 31 votes against and the 2 abstentions [que] we pulled were not enough. The government placed 47 votes in favor. We missed 7 votes. It agonizes democracy”, criticized the parliamentarian from Rio de Janeiro.

In addition to them, Magno Malta (PL-ES) highlighted that he voted against the nomination because Dino is a communist and because he does not believe that the Minister of Justice will, in fact, free himself from his political profile when he arrives at the Court. “You cannot separate a man from his convictions”, commented Malta.

Before the vote in the plenary, senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) stated that Dino had avoided his commitment to impartiality in the STF and highlighted that the Minister of Justice’s previous statements about former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) were a warns “about the integrity and politicization of the Judiciary”.

“Flávio Dino avoids his commitment to impartiality in the STF! His previous statements against President @jairbolsonaro are a warning about the integrity and politicization of the Judiciary”, criticized Marinho.

Deputies also criticize Dino’s approval for the STF

The leader of the opposition in the Chamber, deputy Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), said it was a shame that Dino was approved by the Senate for the STF. “Shame! Dino approved. We have a subservient Senate. Now there is a communist in the STF with no appreciation for democracy and freedom. Congratulations to the 31 senators who voted against this nonsense. That in 2026 we have the organization to elect senators of character and that we know who to vote for,” he wrote.

“A communist in the STF is unacceptable,” said federal deputy Zucco (Republicanos-RS).

Deputy Messias Donato (Republicanos-ES) also said that Dino’s approval is “absurd”, given so many “very serious” statements he made. “He is happy to say that he is a communist and that his idol is Lenin, who exterminated thousands of people. So this is nonsense. Not to mention that he treats Parliament with contempt, and on several occasions he was summoned to provide clarifications and did not appear,” Donato told People’s Gazette.

The fact that Dino was a communist was also criticized by deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG). “Passivity and civility towards a communist is a sign that they have no idea what a communist is capable of”, wrote the Minas Gerais parliamentarian on the X network, formerly Twitter.

According to deputy Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS), Dino accumulates a “series of irresponsibility as Minister of Justice” and “made a mockery of Parliament, both the Chamber and the Senate”. “The hearing was shameful because he demonstrated or tried to demonstrate that he was someone else, which he was until yesterday, in his statements. So, the senators were too naive to believe and those who voted in favor share the same bad faith as the minister who does not behave according to his trajectory, lying all the time”, declared the Novo deputy to People’s Gazette.

Former federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol said he was “deeply sad and disappointed”. “The Senate fails again to contain the authoritarianism and politicization of the STF, which will only get worse with Flávio Dino. God have mercy on Brazil and those that the STF considers its enemies, such as the defendants of 8/1 and Lava Jato”, he declared on the X network.

Other manifestations

In addition to the deputies and the former parliamentarian, the former presidential candidate for Novo Felipe D’Avila apontou como “vergonhoso” o resultado da votação. “A aprovação de Flávio Dino para o STF torna a Corte ainda mais ativista e autoritária, totalmente ao contrário do que o Brasil precisa hoje. É mais uma pá de terra no judiciário brasileiro, que já anda tão deterioriado”, escreveu on network X.

In the same vein, the president of Novo, Eduardo Ribeiro, criticized the choice of a “convinced communist” for the Supreme Court and defended a profound renewal in the Senate in 2026.

With Dino’s approval, the STF will be formed by no less than 7 of the 11 ministers, having been nominated by PT members: Lula or former president Dilma Rousseff.

The new minister of the Court will inherit 344 shares that were under the analysis of minister Rosa Weber, who retired at the end of September. Several of the processes relate to thorny issues involving former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the criminalization of abortion, the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, among others.
