Lula and slavery – 07/22/2023 – Elio Gaspari

It’s hard for Lula to go a week without saying something inappropriate.
At a stop in Cape Verde he said that “we are deeply grateful to the African continent for everything that was produced during 350 years of slavery in our country”.
The heavens fell. It seemed that Bernardo Pereira de Vasconcelos had been resurrected. In 1843 he said that “Africa has civilized America”. Bernardo was not just a defender of slavery, he defended the smuggling of Africans and fought the project for a railroad from Rio to Resende.
He went very thirsty to the pot. Here is Lula’s sentence and reasoning, in his soapbox way:
“We Brazilians are formed by the African people. Our culture, our color, our size is the result of the miscegenation of Indians, blacks and Europeans. […] We are deeply grateful to the African continent for everything that was produced during 350 years of slavery in our country. […] We think that the form of payment that a country like Brazil can make [está em] technology, the possibility of training people so that they have expertise in the various areas that the African continent needs, industrialization and agriculture”.
The speech deserved a comb, but its meaning is unmistakable.
lame ministry
On the eve of a cosmetic change in the ministry, the commissioner let the news circulate that the real reform will come at the end of the year or at the beginning of 2025.
In this way, the number of people interested in the chairs can be multiplied and the commitment of those in the chairs can be divided.
