The police searched the French Ministry of Finance on Monday (15), as part of an investigation into suspected tax favors granted to PSG during Neymar’s transfer from Barcelona in 2017, different sources reported on Thursday (18).
The operation, revealed by the media outlet Mediapart, was carried out in the presence of two investigating judges, one of the sources close to the case told AFP.
Investigators carried out searches in several services of the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFIP), headed until recently by Jérôme Fournel, current chief of staff to Minister Bruno Le Maire.
Since September 2022, two investigating judges have been investigating the influence tactics attributed to former PSG communications director Jean-Martial Ribes, 57 years old.
The court wants to know whether former government deputy Hugues Renson tried to obtain “tax advantages” for PSG during the transfer of Neymar from Barcelona, which cost 222 million euros (US$240 million or R$1.18 billion at current exchange rates). ), the most expensive in the history of football.
In a report sent on November 21 to an investigating judge, revealed by the newspaper Libération and consulted by AFP, investigators indicate possible “influence peddling” on the part of Renson.
According to this report, which analyzes ten years of telephone messages, Ribes requested, “without any doubt, (…) the services” of Renson.
On July 24, 2017, the former vice-president of the National Assembly states that he took a “PSG issue” – possibly supervision of the transfer – to Gérald Darmanin, then Minister of Public Accounts and current Minister of the Interior.
Darmanin “considers that everything is fine (…). What matters is that the documents we mentioned are presented”, writes Renson to Ribes.
Then, the minister publicly celebrates “the taxes that Neymar [poderá] pay in France” and guaranteed that its services would analyze the financial configuration of the transfer.
On August 3, 2017, the historic agreement was reached and announced.
