Opening round of the Women’s Brasileirão marked by protests

The Brazilian Women’s Football Championship is back, after an interruption of almost two weeks for games between national teams. Two matches opened the fifth round of the competition this Friday (12). Highlight the black and white classic, between Santos and Corinthians, in Vila Belmiro, with the team from the capital of São Paulo winning 3-1.

The Brabas, as the Corinthians players are also known, achieved their fifth victory in five matches, leading the competition with 15 points. Santos, with five points, appears in tenth place, but could end the round in the relegation zone, depending on the other results.

The match in Santos marked the return of Kleiton Lima to command the Sereias da Vila. He left the club in September last year, following allegations, presented in anonymous letters, that he had committed moral and sexual harassment. Reappointed to his position, the technician denied the accusations and revealed that he had requested the opening of an investigation to investigate the authorship of the letters, claiming to be a victim of slander and defamation.

Santos women’s football coordinator, Thais Picarte, said that Peixe carried out an internal investigation and that the arguments against Kleiton were “fragile”. On social media, some of the 14 players who played for the team last year and have already left Alvinegro denied having been contacted.

Kleiton’s return sparked protests. During the National Anthem, the Corinthians players, starters and reserves, lined up with one hand over their mouth, as if they were being “silenced”. Among them, the steering wheel Yaya, who was in the Mermaids in 2023.

Before the ball rolled in this Friday’s other game, between Palmeiras and Avaí Kindermann, at the Jayme Cintra Stadium, in Jundiaí (SP), the athletes from both teams got together and made the same gesture. In the Alviverde squad, midfielder Brena and striker Tainá Maranhão played for Santos last year.

The game at Vila Belmiro started off busy. Two minutes into the first half, midfielder Carol Tavares advanced from the right and crossed for striker Vic Albuquerque, with a header, to open the scoring for Corinthians. During the celebration, the Timão players once again put their hands in front of their mouths, in another protest. At 14, Thaisinha launched fellow striker Ketlen through the middle, who invaded the area, took away goalkeeper Mary Camilo and sent it into the net, equalizing for Santos.

In the second half, Brabas coach Lucas Piccinato sent athletes who were with the Brazilian team at the SheBelieves Cup in the United States onto the field and were spared from the starting team. They ended up being decisive for Corinthians triumph.

In the 33rd minute, Vic Albuquerque crossed from the right, Leidi was unable to clear it and the ball fell to Tamires, who came off the bench, to score the goal. In stoppage time, at 47, Yaya received the ball from striker Gabi Portilho – both started the game as a substitute – and crossed from the right for Tamires to shoot first, giving final figures to the confrontation.

In the Jundiaí match, Palmeiras had no difficulty defeating Avaí Kindermann, 4-0. Palestrinas provisionally took second place, with ten points. The Santa Catarina team remain with one point, in penultimate place, and could end the round in last place if Atlético Mineiro scores against América de Minas Gerais this Saturday (13th), at 3pm (Brasília time), at Arena Gregorão, in Contagem (MG) .

In the 22nd minute of the first half, full-back Bruna Calderan rose in the area on the right and forward Amanda Gutierrez, with a header, opened the scoring. Seven minutes later, full-back Juliete crossed from the left, goalkeeper Maike didn’t clear it and the ball fell to the feet of midfielder Bianca Gomes, who sent it into the empty goal.

Almost immediately, in the 32nd minute, striker Letícia Moreno took advantage of defender Poliana’s cross from the right and sent it into the net, making the team’s third goal. In the final stage, after just four minutes, Palmeiras scored the fourth goal, again with Letícia Moreno, completing a half-way cross from Bruna Calderan, on the right.
