The international athletics federation (World Athletics) announced this Wednesday (10) that, for the first time, it will offer a cash prize to athletes who win the Olympic title at the Paris-2024 Games.
Each of the 48 Olympic champions in the French capital will receive a prize of US$50,000 (R$250,000), to be shared in the case of team events.
World Athletics, which will pay the US$2.4 million (R$12 million) with revenue from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), highlighted that it thus becomes the first international federation to economically reward its Olympic champions.
Starting at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, the prizes will be expanded to all medalists, including those who win silver and bronze.
These awards “are a demonstration of the athletes’ empowerment and recognition of the crucial role they play in the success of the Games”, highlighted the president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe.
