OAB Committee seeks to ensure safe electoral process in Amazonas

Manaus (AM) – The elections for City Hall and City Council are approaching and, as a result, voters’ concerns regarding the transparency of this process are increasing. To ensure a reliable electoral race, the Amazonas Committee to Combat Corruption (CACC) of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) has been working, since 2017, to improve measures that prevent irregularities.

According to the vice-president of the Federal Accounting Council and member of the Committee, Manoel Júnior, during the electoral process, the Committee receives complaints and forwards demands that are analyzed with any type of irregularity to the Public Ministry of Amazonas (MPAM).

“We are attentive to all the movements of pre-candidates and also of candidates after their applications have been approved. We observe whether there is abuse of economic and political power, irregular propaganda, fake news and all types of irregularities that may be committed by candidates during and after the electoral process”,

concluded.

Among the activities within the competence of the Committee, which is linked to the General Comptroller of the State of Amazonas (CGE-AM), are the formulation of policy guidelines, implementation of projects and scientific research to prevent and combat corruption and impunity, among others.

This year’s schedule stipulates the production and launch of a booklet on conscious voting, the preparation of the document with public policy suggestions for candidates for the position of mayor of Manaus and the city’s Legislative Branch, the development of lectures on electoral accounts, electoral propaganda , fake news and artificial intelligence and women’s participation in the election. Currently, the Committee’s headquarters are located at the Union of Professional Journalists of the State of Amazonas.

To continue with educational training, the Committee will hold a free course, this Saturday (2), on “Legal instruments to combat corruption in the 2024 Elections”, aimed at lawyers, accountants, administrators, economists, journalists, party leaders and activists social.

The course will be taught by the professor of electoral law, prosecutor in MP/AM and Electoral Prosecutor in the 17th Electoral Zone of Amazonas, Weslei Machado, at the Escola Superior de Advocacia do Amazonas (ESA/OAB-AM), in the Adrianópolis neighborhood.

The Committee held a meeting to align cooperation in holding clean elections with ethical candidates, last Tuesday (27), with representatives of civil society entities, the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) Seccional Amazonas and the coordinator from the electoral prosecutors, Mauro Veras, from the Public Ministry of Amazonas (MPAM).

On this occasion, the institutions reaffirmed their commitment to combating electoral corruption in the 2024 municipal election, based on cooperation in defense of an event that also values ​​the conscious vote of each voter in the 62 municipalities in Amazonas.

The meeting highlighted the relevance of collaboration between the Public Electoral Ministry, civil society entities and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) Amazonas Section, in holding transparent, clean elections with ethical candidates.

“The partnership between the Public Electoral Ministry and civil society is fundamental to promoting the integrity of the electoral process and combating illicit practices that compromise democracy”,

said the prosecutor, Mauro Veras.

Wilson Reis, president of the Union of Professional Journalists in Amazonas (Sinjor/Am) emphasized the importance of freedom of expression, stating: “Freedom of the press is essential for society. It guarantees transparency and supervision of political acts, contributing to the smoothness of the electoral process and the construction of a fairer and more democratic society.”

“The meeting was essential to reaffirm our commitment to clean elections, honest politicians and quality management”,

highlighted Cassius Clei, representative of OAB/AM. He highlighted the need to strengthen social conscience and value conscious voting to elect politicians committed to the well-being of society.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Electoral propaganda from parties, coalitions, party federations, candidates and candidates must have mandatory notice of the use of Artificial Intelligence in the content published. The regulation was carried out by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), on Tuesday (27).

In addition to this new feature, other points were added to curb misinformation and the spread of fake news: prohibition of deepfakes; restriction of the use of robots to mediate contact with voters; and accountability of big techs that do not immediately remove content containing disinformation, hate speech, Nazi and fascist ideology, as well as anti-democratic, racist and homophobic content.
