Expert explains why ultra-processed foods are associated with obesity

Malnutrition is characterized by a deficiency of calories or one or more essential nutrients. In addition to hunger, poor food choices, such as basing your diet on ultra-processed foods, can lead to malnutrition.

“Malnutrition can be caused by insufficient food intake or poor diet. Therefore, choosing food well, being in moderation and ensuring variety are basic attitudes to have a balanced diet”, explains the nutrition manager at the São Camilo de São Paulo Hospital Network, Tatiana Bononi.

The expert explains that ultra-processed foods include industrial formulations based on ingredients extracted or derived from food or synthesized in the laboratory. Ultra-processed food labels contain huge lists of ingredients, which have the function of extending the life of the food or providing it with color, flavor, aroma and texture.

“The majority of ultra-processed foods are consumed in place of foods such as fruits, milk and water or even culinary preparations. These foods should be avoided or their consumption reduced, as they encourage excessive calorie consumption and impair the feeling of satiety”, warns the nutritionist.

Tatiana highlights a list of the 10 worst foods that are in the diet of most Brazilians. Check out:

  • Soft drinks (diet or regular);
  • French fries;
  • Processed meats (bacon, sausages, nuggets, canned goods);
  • Ice cream;
  • filled biscuits;
  • Stuffed churros;
  • Hot dog;
  • Margarine;
  • packaged snacks;
  • Instant noodles.

“The complexity of food problems brings about the need for urgent promotion and awareness among the population about good nutrition and how to select food well. This is fundamental to improving the problems of malnutrition and obesity, which today affect all segments of the population”,

says Tatiana.

Better choices

The nutritionist advises that people choose natural or minimally processed foods, as they do not contain salt, sugar, oils, fats, or other ingredients.

“Opt for vegetables, fruits, beef and fresh fish”, suggests Tatiana.
