The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), will announce Gilberto Natalini as the capital’s new executive secretary for Climate Change. He takes the post in place of Antonio Fernando Pinheiro Pedro, exonerated after claiming that the planet “save itself” from global warming and criticizing the scientific consensus on the subject.
Former councilor (five terms) and former municipal secretary of Verde, Natalini is a respected historical leader among environmentalists. With the choice, Nunes seeks to mitigate the negative impact of Pinheiro Pedro’s statements. Natalini was from PSDB and PV, from which he left in 2020.
As councillor, one of the main laws he passed was the one that obliges the city hall to use reused water to wash fairs, parks and streets.
In 2017, during the João Doria administration, Natalini was fired after denouncing an alleged scheme for irregularly obtaining environmental compensation certificates for the civil construction market in the city of São Paulo. At the time, municipal management stated that it would forward the complaints.
One of Natalini’s missions as secretary will be to further increase the municipality’s vegetation cover, which increased from 48% to 54.13% between 2020 and 2022.
In addition to Natalini, Nunes will officiate three new secretaries: Luis Felipe Arellano, in Finance, Edsom Ortega, in Special Projects, and Milton Vieira, in Housing.
