In an interview with Sheet in 2021, Santos president Andres Rueda stated that the feeling with each coach change was a failure in football planning.

In a new conversation with the report, this year, he said he has no fear that he will be the first representative to make the team be relegated.

The two statements are intertwined in the choice of Uruguayan Diego Aguirre. He is the team’s eighth coach under the Rueda administration. He takes over with Santos in the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship.

After last weekend’s round, alvinegro was in 17th position, with 18 points. It is tied with Bahia, 16th, but loses on goal difference, one of the tiebreakers.

Aguirre takes over from Paulo Turra, who was sacked after the 1-1 draw with Ahletico Paranaense last Saturday (5), at Vila Belmiro. In seven matches, Turra won only one. And the 4-3 victory over Goiás happened only because Bruno Arleu de Araújo whistled a penalty in the final minutes. It was such an absurd marking that the referee was removed by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) arbitration commission the next day.

In his farewell message, published on Instagram, the coach thanked the opportunity to manage Santos, regretted not being able to work with the reinforcements that are being hired and used expressions such as “raising metrics” to praise his own performance.

He marked his passage by having removed, under the blessings of the same Rueda who fired him, players who had not been performing well. One of the reasons for hiring him was to resolve the complacency of the cast. It didn’t work out.

The main name put aside by Turra, the Venezuelan Soteldo, was reinstated in the squad and went from an outcast to a central plan of the team to escape relegation.

If Santos doesn’t get the hiring of players and coaches right, in football coordination the scenario is no different. André Mazzuco left Vila in October 2021, and one of the criticisms of him was the accumulation of previous work that led clubs to the second division. He now holds the same position at Botafogo, which has a 13-point lead in the Brazilian Championship.

He was replaced by Edu Dracena, who left the club in July last year and today criticizes Rueda. He complains that the president doesn’t understand anything about football. The manager, on the other hand, regrets having honored the former defender and, with that, fired coach Fábio Carille. Then Newton Drummond, known as Chumbinho, arrived with a promise of long-term work. It lasted about a month.

Santos stayed two months with the vacant position, and Rueda belittled the position, describing it as a place for “frustrated businessmen”. In November 2022, the choice was Paulo Roberto Falcão.

With the name of soccer coordinator, the former player was the president’s shield for hiring that didn’t work out, investments questioned in the deliberative council, the third consecutive elimination in the group stage of the Campeonato Paulista, early falls in the Copa do Brasil and in the Sul-Americana and choice of coaches like Paulo Turra, indicated by Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Falcão left the club last Friday, hours after being denounced for sexual harassment. An employee of the hotel where he lived, in Santos, registered a police report stating that the director passed his private parts twice through his arm.

Falcão defended himself by saying that this did not happen.

Aguirre’s debut could be next Sunday (13), against Fortaleza, away from home. Santos will not have goalkeeper João Paulo, midfielder Lucas Lima and striker Mendoza. The three, hanging, received yellow cards within the space of a few minutes in the second half of the match against Athletico.
