Spaniard Rafael Nadal said on Sunday (7) that he will not participate in the Australian Open due to a muscle injury. The announcement comes just a week after his return to the court, after almost a year away due to physical problems.

“At the moment, I’m not prepared to compete at the highest level in five-set matches. I’m going to fly back to Spain to see my doctor, receive treatment and rest,” said the tennis player on the social network X.

At almost 37 years old and after two hip surgeries in 2023, Nadal had not played since January last year. He returned to the circuit at the Brisbane Tournament, where he was eliminated by Australian Jordan Thompson, number 55 in the world.

During the match, he had to be treated for discomfort in his hip, in the same area where he had surgery last year.

“In my last game in Brisbane I had a small problem with a muscle which, as you know, caused me concern,” he said.

“As soon as I arrived in Melbourne, I had the opportunity to have an MRI. I have a micro tear in a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury, and that is good news,” he added.

Owner of 22 Grand Slam series titles, the former world number one is now recalibrating his goals for the season. The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, is out of reach.
