The Federal Public Ministry opened a civil investigation to investigate the unjustified refusal of civil registration offices in Acre to register indigenous people with names in their traditional languages.

Complaints about the refusals were made by indigenous people from the municipalities of Assis Brasil, Feijó and Tarauacá, from ethnic groups such as the Huni Kuin.

The complaints gave rise to a report forwarded by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Municipality of Redenção (PA) suggesting that the Federal Public Ministry in Acre act to resolve the issue.

In addition to initiating the investigation, which will last for one year, the MPF also recommended that registry offices start registering newborns with names in their traditional languages. The bodies will have 15 days to inform what measures they have adopted.

If the registry office refuses registration, the recommendation advises that the MPF be contacted and that the registry office, the employee who denied the request and the name of the indigenous person who was denied registration be informed.
