The Federal Public Ministry of Minas Gerais is investigating the suspicion that the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) has used a second spy system illegally to invade computers. On October 20, the Federal Police began Operation Last Mile to investigate the use of the First Mile GPS cell phone tracking system by Abin.

“We confirm that the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) will investigate an alleged second illegal spying system that was being used by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin),” said the agency, in a note sent to People’s Gazette. The MPF did not provide details about the second system that will be investigated. “We do not have access to more information, as the procedure has restricted access,” stated the agency.

First Mile allows its users to enter a cell phone number and know, in real time, the approximate location of its holder. This is possible through clandestine access, which would be provided by the Israeli company Cognyte, to a system called “Signalling System No. 7” (SS7) used by mobile phone operators to redirect calls and forward messages between them.
