If opinion is accepted, former president will be ineligible for 8 years
Brasilia DF) – The Deputy Electoral Prosecutor, Paulo Gonet, defended today (22) the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro in the process that deals with the disclosure of attacks on the electronic voting system during a meeting held in July last year, at the Palácio da Alvorada.
This morning, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) began the trial of the action in which the PDT questions the legality of the meeting and accuses Bolsonaro of abuse of political power and misuse of the media.
If the opinion of the Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) is accepted by the court, Bolsonaro will be ineligible for a period of eight years and will not be able to participate in the next elections.
In Gonet’s understanding, Bolsonaro committed abuse of public power by turning the event with ambassadors into “election act” to deliver a speech “distrust and disbelief” on the 2022 elections.
“The event was deformed into an instrument of electoral maneuver, translating the deviation of purpose”
he stated.
The prosecutor said that false information about the elections was disseminated through the broadcast of the event on social networks and on TV Brasil, a broadcaster of Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC).
“The meeting was arranged so that the international community and Brazilian citizens, through television and internet dissemination, were exposed to untrue allegations to affect confidence in the voting system”
he concluded.
After Gonet’s demonstration, the trial was suspended and will resume on Tuesday (27).
