Prosecutor requests withdrawal of all gifts received in office

Brasilia DF) – The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Federal Court of Auditors (MPTCU) requested this Monday (4) that all official gifts received by former President Jair Bolsonaro be returned.

In the request to the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), attorney Lucas Rocha Furtado also asked for the collection of all items received by Bolsonaro during the 4 years of his mandate during visits by foreign authorities to Brazil and on international trips.

The representation included reports published by the press that show the receipt of various official gifts, such as watches, gold-plated sculptures, a samurai helmet, a painting of the Temple of Solomon, in Israel, a model of the Taj Mahal temple produced in white marble, between others.

The case of jewelry received by Jair Bolsonaro came to light after the outbreak of Operation Lucas 12:2, by the Federal Police, which investigates the operation of a criminal organization to divert and sell gifts from foreign authorities during the former president’s government.

For the prosecutor, the objects should be incorporated into public property because they were received during the exercise of the mandate.

“The jurisprudence of this court, with regard to gifts received by Presidents of the Republic, is that all bibliographic and museological documents received, as well as all gifts received, must be incorporated into the Union’s assets,” said the attorney.

In the document, Furtado mentioned the watch received by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from former French President Jacques Chirac. “It should be noted that it is known that a similar case was submitted to this Court, but with another manager: the honorable President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Although a senator sent a representation to the TCU asking the body to investigate a gift received referring to a Piaget watch valued at 80,000 reais and given as a gift to the PT by the former president of France Jacques Chirac, it should be noted that Mr. Lula, while he is president, he will be able to use the watch, but he will not be able to dispose of it, in Brazil or abroad”, said the attorney.

The process to evaluate the request for the return of the jewels has not yet been opened by the TCU.
