The presence of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, at the Public Security Commission (CSP) of the Senate this Tuesday (9) ended up in an argument with the opposition marked by lines of arrogance and intransigence. The evaluation of senators and analysts present is that the meeting was a preview of the aggressive climate that may dominate the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) of the acts of vandalism of January 8th.

Dino was questioned by the opposition about the government’s attempt to restrict freedom of expression on social networks and to curtail the right of the population to legally possess weapons. On both issues, he was intransigent and mocked the opposing senators. He also made it clear that the government is not willing to negotiate any kind of concessions on these issues.

The minister stated, for example, that measures taken by the government to legislate on the control of social networks would be the prerogatives of the Executive. “Freedom of expression has limits set forth in the Constitution,” he said.

Control of social networks

The Minister of Justice was questioned by senators Magno Malta (PL-ES) and Sérgio Moro (União Brasil-PR) about bills and government acts to regulate the internet that are being understood by the opposition as acts of censorship of freedom of expression .

“Freedom of expression is a regulated, not absolute, constitutional value. It does not exist for those who commit crimes of terrorism, attacks on democracy and attacks on honor. Congress does not exercise a regulatory monopoly, as the regulatory functions are the responsibility of the three powers”, said the minister.

Disarming regular snipers and hunters

Opposition senators, led by Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), compared the government’s alleged lack of rigor in trying to seize weapons held by organized crime groups with the unlimited effort by Dino’s portfolio to disarm collectors, sports shooters and hunters, the CACs.
