Pro-Ciro, David said he would wear red for Lula – 05/09/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Former federal deputy David Miranda defended the vote for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) against Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the 2022 elections even though he was a coreligionist and supporter of Ciro Gomes (PDT), who at the time was also running for the Palácio do Highland.

His declaration of vote for the PT was made in June last year, after Ciro signaled that he would not support Lula in a second round against Bolsonaro.

One of the biggest enthusiasts of the pedetista’s candidacy for the Presidency, Miranda told the column that he would, yes, vote for Lula if he disputed the second electoral round against the then president.

“I’ll dress in red [cor do PT] from head to toe and go out asking for a vote”, said the parliamentarian. He said, however, that he was confident that Bolsonaro would not even be in the second round, since he believed that Ciro Gomes could overtake him.

“I am very confident that we will have a second round between Ciro and Lula,” he said. At the time, according to a survey by the Datafolha institute, Lula had 48% of the votes, Bolsonaro, 27%, and Ciro Gomes, 7%.

David Miranda died this Tuesday (9). Married to journalist Glenn Greenwald, he had been hospitalized in August last year at Clínica São Vicente, in Rio de Janeiro, with a serious condition of inflammation in the abdominal region. The cause of death has not been reported.

The announcement was made by Glenn on social media. “His death this morning came after a nine-month battle in the ICU. He died in complete peace, surrounded by our children, family and friends,” he wrote.

The journalist recalled the trajectory of his partner, with whom he had two children. David’s mother passed away when he was five. Left in an orphanage, in the Jacarezinho favela, in the north of Rio, he was adopted by his neighbor, the mother of four other children.

“He became the first openly gay man elected councilor in Rio de Janeiro, and federal deputy at the age of 32. He inspired so many people with his biography, passion and life force”, said Glenn. David would have turned 38 on Wednesday (10).
