Morocco, Spain and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host the first three games of the competition to mark the tournament’s centenary, FIFA said on Wednesday (4).

FIFA said the joint bid from Morocco, Portugal and Spain was the only candidate to host the tournament. The entity should only announce its headquarters next year.

The first World Cup in history, in 1930, was held in Uruguay and won by the hosts after defeating Argentina in the final in Montevideo.

Wednesday’s decision marks the first time that the World Cup will be held across three continents and six countries, which could mean that group stage games could be played in different seasons depending on the hemisphere.

“The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the single bid of Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host the event in 2030 and [suas seleções] will automatically qualify based on the existing vacancy allocation.”FIFA said in a statement.

“Furthermore, taking into account the historical context of the first FIFA World Cup [no Uruguai]the FIFA Council unanimously agreed to host a unique centenary celebration ceremony in the country’s capital, Montevideo […] as well as three World Cup games in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay respectively.”

Earlier, the announcement had already been anticipated by the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez. “The 2030 Centennial World Cup starts where it all began. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host the opening matches of the #MundialCentenario!”wrote Domínguez on the social network X, without giving further explanation.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said that the country’s team, world champion in 2022, “will play the first game of the group stage of the 2030 World Cup at home and with its people”.

The 2022 World Cup was held in Qatar.

“In a divided world, FIFA and football are coming together”said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Infantino stated that the first of three matches in South America will be played at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, where the first World Cup was held in 1930.
