In this edition, Elementary School students (2nd, 5th and 9th years) participated. and High School (3rd grade), as well as Youth and Adult Education (EJA). In total, more than 133 thousand students, from the capital and the interior, were evaluated.

Avam is an internal, diagnostic and formative assessment, applied by the Department of Education, through the Department of Public Policies and Educational Programs (Deppe) whose main objective is to assess the learning of students in the state education network.

According to the Manager of Learning and Performance Assessment (Gaade), Nelyzabel Menezes, the action is important for the secretariat to monitor the progress and learning gaps of the network’s students. “Today we had the application of the 3rd regular Avam and the 1st Avam EJA, both in schools in the capital and in the interior. This is preparation for the external evaluation that is being carried out this year”, stressed Nelyzabel.

The test is based on the Portuguese Language and Mathematics Reference Matrices, used in the National Basic Education Assessment System (Saeb) 2021, a national test that makes up the score for the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb).

Preparation

The Ribeiro da Cunha Full-Time State School, in the center of Manaus, is one of more than 600 teaching units from the Department of Education that administered the Avam tests this Tuesday. According to the teacher, Lucimeire Santos, the school develops a series of activities to prepare students for external assessments.

“To prepare the boys for Avam and Saeb, from the beginning of the year, I make a diagnosis and, from there, I start to check what difficulties they present. Given these difficulties, I work on an action plan with the descriptors or skills that they have the most difficulty with and I work on it in the classroom”,

explained.

Saeb

Saeb allows the evaluation of the quality of education offered to students across Brazil. The students’ performance averages calculated in Saeb make up the Ideb. Today, Amazonas occupies 8th position in the ranking in Brazil.

Student Sofia Silva, aged 10, who is in the 5th year, took the test and said that the assessment included everything that was worked on by the teacher in the classroom.

“The teacher, according to the other tests, took the questions we got wrong and worked on them in the classroom. She worked on the board, we copied it and so it wasn’t difficult to learn, it was easy”, said Sofia.
