Halevi reacted to Lula’s statements that the Israeli army’s counterattack could also be considered “equal to terrorism”, and that the country does not have the right to “kill millions” because of the terrorist group’s actions. The president has repeated his condemnation of Israel’s response countless times in speeches and online lives.

“Anyone who reacts with greater outrage to Israel’s response to the massacre than to the massacre itself is morally flawed. I don’t feel obligated to listen to or respect these voices. I view these voices with contempt”, said the writer in an interview published this Monday (27) by Newspaper.

Yossi Halevi claims that people who are treating him as if he were a “practitioner of genocide” because of Israel’s military response “have no moral right” to his conscience. “And if the president of Brazil fits into this category, if the hat fits, so be it”, fired the writer against Lula.

In addition to condemning Israel’s response against Hamas, Lula also defends the solution of two sovereign states for the region, with Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully. This is also Halevi’s defense, but it is far from happening at this point in the conflict.

“This is now inconceivable for the Israelis. If you talk to the Israelis now about a Palestinian state in the West Bank, they will tell you, very reasonably, that after what just happened in Gaza, how could we run the risk of duplicating Gaza in the West Bank?”
