Moraes says he hopes for the end of such polarized elections – 02/06/2023 – Politics

The president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), Minister Alexandre de Moraes, said this Friday (2) in Belo Horizonte that he hopes that Brazil will never again have elections as polarized as those that took place in 2022.

In the morning, the minister participated in a meeting of representatives of the country’s regional electoral courts on security in elections, held at the Military Police Officers’ Club of Minas Gerais.

“I am extremely optimistic, also because a Corinthians fan who is not an optimist is not a Corinthians fan. I hope we never have such polarized elections again. Such violent hate speech. A political opponent is not an enemy that needs to be slaughtered. A political opponent needs to be defeated”, he said Moraes.

When talking about fake news, the minister also stated that the Electoral Justice had to abandon a minimalist position to act more intensely in the organization of last year’s elections.

“The Electoral Justice needed to leave a minimalist position, traditionally minimalist, to act in the fight against these true digital militias”, he pointed out.

Moraes stated that these digital militias propagated and continue to propagate hatred and the end of democracy, but that now there is no longer a “lawless land”. “They wanted to direct the voter. They wanted the voter not to appear at the polls.”

The minister cited the behavior of part of the Brazilian business community in past elections.
“Electoral harassment took place. It is unimaginable in the 21st century that businessmen, I would say, completely lost their sense, respect, fear, then gained fear again, right? “, he spoke.

“They lost their fear, filming, threatening their workers. If they didn’t vote for those candidates, if that polling station didn’t have so many votes, they would send them away”, he recalled.

Moraes also spoke of the decision on carrying weapons. “We had to act to prohibit them from entering armed [nas seções]. To me it’s so obvious. It shouldn’t even need to be banned. What is a person going to vote armed for? Good thing won’t do.”

Throughout the lecture, the minister mentioned the importance of integrating the Electoral Justice with the security forces to guarantee the holding of the election.
