Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), said this Monday morning (13) that social networks should be considered communication companies so that they are responsible for the content released by their channels.
For Moraes, the fact that companies concentrate advertising revenues worldwide means that they cannot be considered just technology firms.
“We have to change the legal form of accountability for who owns the networks. It is still not possible today for the large platforms to be considered technology companies. They are also communication companies, advertising companies. The largest volume of advertising in the world it’s these platforms that win.”
Moraes’ statement was made before participating in an event at FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas), in Rio de Janeiro, on freedom of expression, social networks and democracy. Authorities, journalists and researchers participate in the meeting.
“The business model of the networks is different and precisely for this reason we have to negotiate the form of regulation. Always taking into account that the Constitution does not guarantee freedom of expression such as freedom for aggression, hate speech, for speech against democracy. And we we saw what has been happening and what happened in the elections”, said the minister.
