Potassium exploration project generates disagreements among indigenous people

The Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) stated that the venture to explore potash in the Amazon, run by a subsidiary company of the Canadian bank Forbes & Manhattan, is “of total interest to rural groups” who are “contrary to indigenous agendas”. The information is from the Folha website.

“Potassium is used to produce a fertilizer widely used by agribusiness. This fact increases the pressure from this segment for the project to be approved”,

said the department headed by minister Sônia Guajajara.

“The MPI is against the process of coercion, manipulation, intimidation and undue pressure that the Mura people have been suffering, as confirmed by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the Court,” he stated. “Of the more than 12 thousand Mura indigenous people affected by the Potássio do Brasil project in Autazes (AM), not 1% of the group’s participants participated in the meeting.”

The ministry refers to a meeting “whose attendance list was improperly used as an approval list for the Potássio Project”.

In a statement, Potássio do Brasil, responsible for the project, said that the project has approval from more than 90% of the Mura people. “Any requirement outside the established rules is unreasonable chicanery to alter the result and interfere, unduly, with the will of the indigenous people,” she stated.

The company also said that the project will generate jobs and income and reduce the country’s external dependence on potash. “The attacks on the process of choosing indigenous people are nothing more than another maneuver to produce an artificial scandal. The movement of State agents against the project is outdated and ideological.”
