Federal deputy Josenildo Abrantes (PDT), filed last Tuesday, 21st, bill No. 5584/2023 which obliges water or energy supply concessionaires to provide prior notification to the consumer in debt, informing them within 30 days in advance of the suspension of service provision.

The project also provides for concessionaires to offer in the notification, possibilities and forms of negotiation and settlement of debts, without prejudice to the effective suspension of service at the end of the term and due to continued default.

In addition to the thirty-day period, the PL also prohibits cuts from being made on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, nor on holidays or the day before holidays. Or outside business hours.

“We want to protect those who have the most difficulty in keeping their bills up to date and also guarantee the receipt of the service provided to the concessionaires. This period allows the most vulnerable population and small businesses the opportunity to pay their invoices without suspending services and suffering impacts on their day-to-day activities, or further losses in their businesses”, defends Josenildo.

The parliamentarian assesses that the interruption of these services, essential for human dignity, such as water and electricity, should only occur as a last resort, with all friendly and appropriate measures being taken to maintain the services.
