Minister of Tourism meets with UN Secretary General to talk about COP30 – 04/15/2024 – Panel

The Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, met this Monday (15) with the Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, and the Secretary-General of the UN Tourism, Zurab Pololikashvili, to talk about actions to promote sustainability through through tourism.

At the meeting, Guterres spoke about the UN’s expectations regarding Belém, which will host COP 30, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, in 2025.

The UN Secretary-General said that, this year, for the first time, there will be a day on sustainable tourism at COP29, which will take place in Azerbaijan. Sabino stated that he is working to ensure that COP30 has two days dedicated to sustainability in tourism.

At the end of March, the Brazilian government created the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP 30, which will operate until June 30, 2026 and will be subordinate to the Civil House of the Presidency. The announcement came amid rumors that Planalto was considering moving meetings to São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Sabino defends keeping COP30 only in Belém.
