Ticket prices for Sunday’s match between Inter Miami and Los Angeles FC are the most expensive for a Major League Soccer game in history, according to TickPick, an online ticket retailer.
Average prices hover around $690 (R$3,400) — a 527% increase over the average ticket price for an MLS game, which was $110 (R$544) before Lionel Messi arrived in the league.
Today, just a few days before the game, the cheapest ticket to see Messi take on last year’s MLS Cup winner will cost US$785 (R$3,800). Without Messi, prices drop dramatically, with the cheapest ticket for the upcoming Los Angeles FC game being 80% cheaper at $151 per seat, according to TickPick.
However, this could be the ceiling for ticket prices. TickPick co-CEO Brett Goldberg told CNN that the market “will likely stabilize prices at the current level, although there is potential for an upward shift in price due to increased demand.”
Plus, Los Angeles FC is one of the most popular teams in the MLS, so demand is always high, Goldberg said, adding that “in this case, you have one of the greatest athletes in the world coming to town”.
Messi’s appearances have regularly raised ticket prices since he arrived in the United States. For last week’s game, in which Messi made his regular season debut, prices were nearly 1,000% higher than normal for a New York Red Bulls ticket.
Apple said subscriptions to its football streaming package had skyrocketed since Messi debuted in July. And Adidas said demand for Messi’s shirt has been “truly unprecedented”, triggering a backlog of orders until October.
