American Megan Rapinoe, one of the biggest stars in women’s football of the last decade, was replaced this Saturday (11) due to injury just minutes after the start of the North American league final, announced as the last game of her career.

Seattle’s OL Reign forward suffered an apparent ankle injury in a non-contact action less than three minutes into the final against NJ/NY Gotham FC.

Rapinoe, 38, fell to the pitch while putting pressure on the opponent’s defense to take the ball away. Visibly emotional, the striker was attended to by the medical team and then helped to get up and limped off the field.

Fans at Snapdragon Stadium, in San Diego (California), stood up to say goodbye to one of the most iconic football players in the country’s history.

Rapinoe, champion of the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2019, ended her extraordinary career with the American national team in September, with which she scored 63 goals in 203 games over more than 17 years.

Off the field, the striker is one of the biggest voices in sport in favor of gender equality, LGBT+ rights and other social and racial causes.

Without Rapinoe, OL Reign ended up defeated 2-1 and finished runner-up in the NWSL.
