PSDB and MDB gave up on forming a federation. The parties’ lawyers analyzed the issue and stated that the MDB’s entry into the existing PSDB federation with Cidadania would open a new four-year countdown, extending it to 2027.
With that, the parties would have to reach a consensus for the 2026 presidential elections, which today does not seem simple: the MDB is part of the Lula government with three ministries and can support the PT or present the current Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet , while the PSDB works to launch its current president, Governor Eduardo Leite (RS).
As the Panel showed, the arrangement sought by the parties focused on the 2024 municipal election. In São Paulo, the MDB-PSDB-Cidadania federation would support the re-election of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), for example.
