Marina and Freixo discuss sustainable tourism in the Amazon – 08/27/2023 – Panel

Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva had a meeting on Friday (25) with Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur, with the aim of accelerating sustainable tourism projects in the Amazon.

Marina has been one of the poles of dispute in the Lula government (PT) regarding the possibility of oil exploration in Foz do Amazonas, which is part of the Equatorial Margin, a region with high oil potential.

On one side is the political and development wing of the government, which has been arguing that it is necessary to carry out studies to identify the existence of fuel in the region and the viability of eventual exploitation. On the other hand, there is the environmental area, led by Marina, which emphasizes the possible environmental impacts linked to the operation.

In this context, carrying out sustainable tourism projects would also be a way of demonstrating that the Environment portfolio is not opposed to initiatives that promote economic development in the region.

In the case of Embratur, the partnership with the Ministry of the Environment would help to overcome the problem of lack of resources.

At the meeting, Marina said that she is going to create a working group on sustainable tourism and that she will invite Embratur to participate.

One of the projects proposes to prepare riverside communities and indigenous villages interested in receiving foreign tourists. International operators report to Embratur that there is demand in the Amazon region, but that logistical difficulties (few flights, high prices) have hindered the transformation into a product on the shelves of travel agencies.
