Vale, BHP and Samarco presented a reparation proposal for the Mariana (MG) disaster considered “embarrassing”, “abusive” and “laughable” by participants from the Public Power present at the renegotiation table meeting held this Friday (1st).

On the 8th, representatives of the Union, governments of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, Federal Public Ministry, Public Defender’s Office of the Union, Public Defenders and Public Ministries of the two states suggested a reparation of around R$ 126 billion, in addition to obligations discussed with the companies.

This Friday, the companies proposed R$42 billion, plus obligations, according to participants at the renegotiation table, whose objective was to discuss the values. The meeting was attended by Caroline Cox, BHP’s legal, governance and external affairs director, and Vale’s executive vice-president, Alexandre Silva D’Ambrosio.

Due to the great divergence, it was decided to temporarily suspend technical discussions and draft texts between the Public Authorities and companies until next Thursday (7), when there will be a new meeting to resume the discussion of values.

The Samarco dam in Mariana collapsed on November 5, 2015, causing one of the biggest environmental tragedies in Brazil.

The mud that came down from the structure killed 19 people, destroyed the district of Bento Rodrigues, in the municipality, and polluted the entire Doce River from Minas Gerais, where it originates, to its mouth in Espírito Santo. Part of the state’s coastline was also affected by pollution.
