According to the governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande, the Mariana agreement could be signed in the first half of 2023. The imbroglio was taken to the meeting of governors with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) this Friday (27) .
He claims that the coordination of the points that still need to be settled will be the responsibility of the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa (PT). “But it’s practically finished, I’d say 95%”, he reports.
Both Casagrande and the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), reaffirmed in the meeting with Lula that signing the agreement is a priority for state administrations. Under negotiation for seven years, the reparation agreement for the Rio Doce tragedy is considered the greatest in history.
The collapse of the Samarco dam — a joint venture between two other mining companies, Vale and BHP Billiton — happened on November 5, 2015.
One district, that of Bento Rodrigues, was destroyed by the mud, which reached the Doce river throughout its route from Minas to its mouth, in Regência, a locality in the municipality of Linhares, in Espírito Santo. The coast of the state was also affected.
