Senator Mara Gabrilli (PSD-SP) posted a video on Twitter in which she walks with an exoskeleton manufactured for people with paralysis.
“I’m not the same person after testing this equipment! In the last three days I’ve been on a mission in the USA, where I’ve tested the Atalante, an exoskeleton that works as a support so that people with paralysis can stand up, move multidirectionally and with arms free,” wrote the senator.
Gabrilli became quadriplegic in 1994, aged 26, after a car accident.
The equipment is produced by the company Wandercraft. One part of the product is attached to the patient’s back, while the other is attached to the side of the legs. It contains a balance system that allows the user to move in different directions and perform tasks with both hands free.
The product is indicated for use in rehabilitation therapies for people who have lost movement. According to the Wandercraft website, the exoskeleton is useful both for improving the locomotion of users, allowing the first steps to be taken even on the first day of treatment, and for the work of therapists by helping in the rehabilitation of patients.
The exoskeleton is not yet available in Brazil, but Senator Gabrilli said that there are intentions to bring it to the country. “Our goal now is to establish a partnership for sharing this technology in Brazil”, she wrote, also on Twitter.
According to the manufacturer, in the European Union, where it is already permitted, Atalante is indicated for paraplegic adults with complete or incomplete motor disability, as well as hemiplegia –when one side of the body is paralyzed– due to a stroke or any other brain injury.
The US also already has the product. It was there that Mara Gabrilli tested the device.
In the North American country, the exoskeleton is indicated for cases of adult patients with hemiplegia, as long as there is supervision by a duly trained professional. Also, use should be carried out in rehabilitation institutions.
