Manaus receives project that will benefit teachers and students with the teaching of robotics and STEM

Manaus (AM) – Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP), a company of the Ardagh Group and one of the global leaders in the production and sale of aluminum packaging for beverages, which since 2018 has had a factory for the production of aluminum lids and seals in Manaus, in the neighborhood Tarumã, announces one of the biggest educational projects of the private sector in Brazil, to benefit public education – the Ardagh for Education.

Around R$ 25 million will be invested over a period of 10 years in training 2,500 teachers from the public school system, in the areas of Robotics and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), involving public schools in Manaus , Alagoinhas (BA) and Jacareí (SP), cities where Ardagh has production units.

The multiplication of knowledge in the classroom could benefit almost 200,000 elementary school students in these three locations, with the learning of skills and abilities required of professionals who will work in companies and factories in the future. AMP already carries out the program in other countries where it operates, such as Germany and the United States, and now it’s time for Brazil and the city of Manaus.

During the 10 years of the program, from August 2023 to 2033, 2,500 teachers will be trained in Robotics and STEM courses, of which 450 will participate in a postgraduate course Lato sensu in STEM developed by Stanford University and applied in Brazil together with Instituto Canoa. By training teachers and expanding their knowledge and that of their students in robotics and STEM, the project acts strategically in qualifying children and young people for the future of work, in the midst of a reality marked by basic deficiencies in the country’s education.

According to PISA, International Student Assessment Program, 2018, 68.1% of Brazilian students, aged 15, do not have a basic level in Mathematics and 55% in Science. In addition, only 13% of public school teachers, according to the 2020 ICT Education survey, are trained to use programming language and robotics in the classroom – crucial topics for a future dominated by data, algorithms and automation.

The project’s first action, scheduled for the 2nd semester of this year, will map the current conditions of public schools in Manaus, in dialogue with local authorities. Based on this survey, which should be completed next December, the teachers and schools that will be part of the initiative will be defined. Courses in Robotics and STEM start in 2024, after this preparatory phase. Over the 10 years of the project, more than 14,000 hours are planned in teacher training courses and the provision of 800 robotics kits to participating schools in Manaus and also in Alagoinhas (BA) and Jacareí (SP).

Another difference foreseen in the project will be the training of 360 young people in Youth and Adult Education (EJA) courses, opening up professional opportunities to a vulnerable portion of the population that has not completed basic training and finds it difficult to enter and grow in the job market. .

The Social Service of Industry (SESI) was the technical partner chosen to implement the project in Brazil, being responsible for the entire educational methodology, training and evaluation activities. This selection process began in 2021 and lasted for 2 years, during which almost a dozen educational institutions in the country were evaluated.

With an eye on the results

One of the key points of the project will be to closely monitor the development of the teachers and students served, both in teaching and learning knowledge in robotics and STEM. SESI’s educational team will make periodic technical visits to schools in the municipalities, in order to assess, from a pedagogical point of view, whether what was trained with the teachers is being transmitted in the classroom to the students.

The impact on student learning, in turn, will be measured by two recurring studies. The first is the Impact Assessment, which compares the performance of students who received robotics and STEM training with those who did not. The second is a Longitudinal Study, which will monitor the development of a sample of students over the ten years of the project.
