By sending Jair Bolsonaro home, Brazil seemed to have freed itself from a backstop. During the pandemic, this spirit doubted the vaccine, suggested that the Covid virus had been manufactured in China and praised chloroquine. Lula put Brazil back on track on the environmental issue and crossed the world to rescue its back, slipping on the banana peel of Gaza.

Last Sunday, in Addis Ababa, he said that “what is happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people does not exist at any other historical moment. In fact, it existed when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.” With this, he opened a crisis and was declared persona non grata by the Israeli government.

Lula had already flanked the fence days before, in Cairo, with two sentences: “Brazil was a country that vehemently condemned Hamas’ position in the attack on Israel and the kidnapping of hundreds of people. We condemn and call the act terrorist act.”

False. The Hamas attack took place on October 7th. Five days later, Itamaraty reported that the classification of Hamas as a terrorist organization was up to the UN. Later he spoke about terrorism.

Lula added: “There is no explanation for Israel’s behavior, under the pretext of defeating Hamas, it is killing women and children — something never seen in any war that I know of.”

Except for the lack of knowledge, this statement was an exercise in rhetoric based on ignorance.

Addis Ababa’s speech had to do with classifying Israel’s behavior in Gaza as “genocide”. That Binyamin Netanyahu’s troops commit war crimes is certain. Genocide is another thing, it is a deliberate act of exterminating a people, wherever they are.

In June 1944, with the war lost, the Germans captured the 400 Jews living on the island of Crete. That month, Brazilian Benjamin Levy, his wife and daughter were arrested in Milan and deported to the Bergen-Belsen camp.

Lula has already said that Napoleon went to China and that the Americans overthrew Dilma Rousseff with an eye on pre-salt oil: “It is necessary that [o petróleo] be in the hands of the Americans because they have to have the stockpile for war. Germany lost the war because it didn’t get to Baku, Russia, to have access to gasoline.”

The Battle of Stalingrad ended in February 1943, when the Germans had already been contained in Moscow, the United States was at war and had broken the leg of the Japanese Navy. If the Germans reached Baku, it would make little difference. They didn’t lose the war because of a lack of gasoline.

It’s worth remembering that World War II didn’t end because the Americans had more gasoline. It ended after the atomic bomb explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which were completed in 1945.

Where Lula gets these ideas from, we don’t know, but in his third term he moves on the international scene with an omnipotence applauded by scholars and poisonous to Brazilian diplomacy.

During his first year of this term, he established himself as an eccentric head of state. Addis Ababa’s speech tempered ignorance with irresponsibility.
